What is Modal Analysis?
Modal analysis is an analytical technique which helps visualize and better understand the root cause and determine the right fix for even the most difficult structural and mechanical problems. The testing process relies on dynamic characteristics like natural frequencies, mode shapes, and damping ratios.
Our Proven Process – Experimental Modal Testing
We conduct thorough modal testing to assess the vibration behavior of your components or systems. Experimental modal testing is used to identify potential natural frequencies of a system. These natural frequencies may affect the performance or reliability of a structure or machine. If these natural frequencies coincide with excitation force generated by equipment or other outside sources, the natural frequencies can be exciting, greatly increasing vibration and potential of damage or quality issues.
In-field testing is performed using a force-instrumented hammer. Tri-axial response measurements are recorded at multiple points on the structure and machinery. The Frequency Response Function (FRF) of each measurement point is calculated. The FRF is imported into a three-dimensional model of the structure and machinery.
Advanced software is used to determine the frequency and damping of identified modes. Animations of the identified modes can then be generated to evaluate the mode shapes and how they may affect the structure or machinery during normal operations. Additionally, the animations can provide actionable insight as to what remedies should be taken to prevent the natural frequencies from being excited.
As the final part of our engagement, our expert will provide a comprehensive report detailing our findings and recommendations.
