Floor Vibration Testing – Background and Applications
Floor vibration monitoring is vital for environments where even small vibration can lead to serious consequences. We utilize high sensitivity accelerometers to measure the vibration amplitudes and frequencies in buildings where:
- there is equipment that can be highly susceptible to floor vibrations or
- where floor vibration can cause issues with human health and perception.
Sensitive equipment can include Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMMs), optical microscopes, and precision balances. Human exposure vibration may be related to industrial ergonomics or human perception such as in hospital environments.
IVC has been engaged to provide services for a variety of applications:
- Sensitive Equipment – like Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM), optical microscopes, and precision balances
- Hospital Environments – operating rooms and patient rooms
- Human Exposure Vibration Surveys, where we assess vibration levels in workplaces
- Research Laboratories with sensitive equipment and experimental processes
- Data Centers – for protection from vibration-induced failures
Our Proven Process
After the initial consultation, our team will travel to your site to collect data. Data collection can be a few minutes to several days, depending on the area specific requirements.
Following rigorous analysis, we will provide a detailed report of the findings from the floor vibration testing. This will include a comparison to the equipment manufacturers’ specifications, a comparison to the stand Vibration Criterion curves (VC-Curves), or a comparison to applicable international standards.
Relevant Testing Standards
- ISO 4866: International standard for measurement and evaluation of vibrations.
- ISO 10137: Guidelines for vibration-sensitive equipment and structures.
- AISC Design Guide: Recommendations for vibration design of steel-framed structures.
- BS 6472: Guide to evaluating human exposure to vibration in buildings.
- Vibration Criterion curves (VC-curves)
